May Growth

Most people have heard the saying, “April showers bring May flowers,” and indeed the Holy Scriptures states, “To everything there is a season” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Just as in the natural world flora and fauna need water to grow; we need the spiritual water from God’s word to promote our moral growth. Plants need not only water but also sunlight and like plants we humans need sunlight, but more importantly we need the scriptures to shine light into our hearts for growth and to expose areas that need pruning.

The first Psalm describes a blessed person as being like a tree planted by rivers, and just as natural trees need water it must have deep roots to extract the water but also to anchor the tree. Deep roots enable a tree to weather violent winds. Regular study and meditation on the Bible grows our roots deep so that we can not only strengthen our union with Christ but also grow fruit and flower.
